Wednesday and Friday Workouts, ‘Water Aerobics Class, Tuesday Afternoon’!

Friends,

Water Aerobics Classes – New for us!
We just had our second water aerobics class this afternoon.  They have been fun and extremely beneficial.  There is so much people with MS can do in water than they can do on land.  After last week, I heard many comments about how good they felt afterwards and how they could feel the muscles they worked that they don’t usually get to work.

Our water aerobics classes are on Tuesday afternoons.  They are 45 minute classes held at Wildwood Lodge in Pewaukee.  First class is from 1:00 – 1:45.  The second class is from 2:00 – 2:45.  You can do one or both as long as we have enough room in each class.

We have a separate e-mail list going to communicate with anyone interested.  If you are interested and would like to join us or at least be on the list, please let Dr Kate Kern know.  You can e-mail Dr Kate @ kborn1234@gmail.com

Waukesha County Aging and Disability Presentation
Last Friday, Sarah Pfeiffle, marketing and outreach coordinator from the Waukesha County Aging and Disability Resource Center will did a great job informing us about the local resources offered at our community’s ADRC.   I had no idea how much help is available to us.

They left quite a bit of information at the gym.  Feel free to check it out.  I hope it’s helpful in some way.

Day of Endurance Training
I hope your training is going well.  I know some are hitting it hard already and are well ahead of what they were doing last year at this time…good job!  We get out of it what we put into it.  Please turn your progress notes into Dr Kate bi-weekly.

Let’s make this journey and experience the best yet and have some fun…together.  As we begin our training, let’s enjoy each day and record what we do on the packet we put together for you.  If you didn’t get a packet, please see Dr Kate or me for your packet.  We’re trying to make it really easy for you to record what you’re doing on a daily basis.  These will be interesting for you to look back at a year from now.  Hopefully, you can do more next year than you can this year.

Remember, try to do daily workouts and just one LONG workout each week.  It’s on the one long day that you want to do just a little better than the week before and gradually build up each week.

Member Spotlight – Betsy Mueller
For the past year and a half or better, Betsy has been training for and planning for running across the United States (yes, on foot) despite her challenges of living with MS.

Betsy used to come to our gym but then she moved to Flagstaff, AZ where she now lives.  If you remember when Betsy first came to our gym, she hadn’t talked to too many people about her MS.  Her first day the gym was quite overwhelming for her (as it is for many people) so she didn’t stay…she left.  For some reason, she came back and is now sharing her journey worldwide.  It’s certainly a journey that should be shared.  Amazing Betsy!

Betsy has a website where she’s sharing her journey.  She has her map along with lots of progress videos, blogs, etc.  Check it out:  BetsyRunsUSwithMS | Transamerica run

Here’s a link to yesterday’s post.  VIDEO UPDATES | BetsyRunsUSwithMS  – great music and original song too.  Betsy has 436 miles done and 2,567.1 miles to go.

Let’s support Betsy and her family on this run.  I’m sure she would love to hear some words of encouragement from all of us on this journey.  We’re with ya Betsy!  You’re showing us that consistency is key and exercise daily is sustainable as a lifestyle with MS.  I’m so happy for you that you are staying ahead of your MS with running.

Many people with MS are not fortunate enough to be able to walk, much less run.  It’s so important as we live with MS that we keep moving and doing what we “can” do.  Let’s do what we can.  Betsy is showing us that we can’t make our MS worse with exercise.  That is now scientifically proven.  Thanks for showing us that Betsy!

Thai Massage with Ricky Heldt
Ricky will be here on Wednesdays doing Thai Massage.

There is a sign-up board to be used to accommodate your needs for your exercise plan.  Some people with spasticity need to be massaged / stretched out before they can exercise.  Some people need a massage after a hard workout to loosen up their tight muscles or relieve pain.

We have limited spots for massages, please be considerate of people that need the massage the most in order to do the exercises they need to do or recover from the exercises they just did.

You can pick the time slot that works for you.

Reiki on Wednesdays and Fridays
Reiki is available at the gym, for FREE, on Wednesdays (Mary B, Jill K) and on Fridays (Linda C and Mary R), 9:30am until noon. Sessions typically last 20-30 minutes. Sign up for a session on the white board.

Reiki (ray-kee) relaxes the body so that healing can occur! The “magic” of Reiki has helped some of our members with pain, insomnia, constipation, and so much more! Try it the next time you are at the gym!

Let’s reach out
I encourage you to share a smile and encouragement with someone.  Perhaps you could call someone that you have not talked with for a while just to say hi and see how they are doing.  We all could use a little extra love and encouragement.

MS is tough.  Let’s have faith, remain calm, be flexible, help each other and learn as much as we can about the challenges of each day as we make good choices and take action.

Let’s keep moving, smiling and loving 😊  It helps!

In God We Trust…we are in good hands.

P.S.   This past week Larry, Cal and I went to Horicon Marsh to see how the spring migration is going.  We had a good time there together.  We saw this Hooded Merganser flying in front of us.

We saw some nice geese in different places

These two looked pretty cozy together

It was fun getting close to them

And even closer as they smiled 😊

The ice was just thawing out in places.  I saw this cross and just had to share it.

This goose kept sticking his head under water.  I thought I would try to capture the water running off his head and beak.

We saw a pair of Trumpeter Swans.  Beautiful scene.

We tried to get a little closer

They seemed like they were in love.  I love noticing love out in nature.

They seem so free and happy.

And so beautiful.  I got lucky capturing more of God’s beauty in nature to share.  I’m thankful.

We had a beautiful example of “sharing” in our backyard yesterday.  They shared for a little while and then the crane pecked the deer in the face and the deer left.

For those who can’t get out and enjoy nature due your challenges with MS…my heart is with you.  You are with me every time I’m out there.  I enjoy being out there and I also enjoy sharing with you.  I know how hard it is not to be able to get out and enjoy nature.  Let’s enjoy nature and God’s beauty together this way.
